Why Being Veteran-Owned Isn't Just a Label — It's How We Practice

Service, integrity, and showing up for people who need it most. I learned those things in the Marine Corps — and they've shaped every patient interaction I've had in the decade since.

I get a little uncomfortable when veteran-owned gets used as a marketing badge. Not because I'm not proud of my time in the Marine Corps — I am — but because the word "service" can start to feel hollow if it isn't backed by something real. So I want to tell you what it actually means for how we run Brightly Telehealth, and where that commitment came from. Because it didn't start with our back-of-the-napkin business plan. It started way before that.

Where it started — boot camp, a med kit, and a different way of seeing people

My first real exposure to medicine was in the Marine Corps, during combat medicine training. There's something about that environment — the stakes, the focus, the non-negotiable importance of getting it right — that changes how you care for people. You're not doing it for the recognition or the glory. You're just doing it because someone in front of you needs help, and you're the one trained to give it. Everything else stops being important in those moments.

My mom's legacy shaped that instinct too, in a different way. She was a nurse — someone who had given years of her life to caring for others — and when she became a cancer patient herself, she kept going back to work until she couldn't anymore. She kept showing up for her patients even while doctors and oncologists were showing up for her. Though she passed when I was a baby, I got hear about how she chose service when she had every reason to step back, and that stuck with me. That mindset, that caring for people is not a job you clock out of — became something I've tried to carry into every patient interaction I have as a clinician.

From the Corps to the clinic — a decade of showing up

After getting out of the Marine Corps, I spent time shadowing PAs across different areas of medicine — emergency, urgent care, family practice. I wanted to find where I could do the most good for the most people, and I found that in the intersection of all three. I've practiced in rural hospitals where I was sometimes the only clinician for miles, in urban emergency settings where decisions have to be fast and right, and internationally, including clinical work in New Zealand. Every one of those settings taught me something different about what patients actually need — and a lot of the time, what they need most is someone who listens.

I've had patients tell me I'm the first provider who's actually sat with them long enough to understand what their day-to-day life looks like — what they're eating, how they're sleeping, whether their knees hurt when they try to exercise, what's causing the stress that's been quietly sabotaging everything else. That context matters enormously in medicine. You can't treat a person well if you only know their labs.

Nine years. Multiple continents. One consistent approach. Whether I was working a rural ER in the Pacific Northwest, a family medicine clinic, or a hospital abroad, the approach has always been the same: treat the whole person, not just the presenting complaint. Listen first. Build a plan that fits their actual life. Follow through.
Why weight loss — and why now

I've always incorporated lifestyle into my treatment plans. Exercise, nutrition, sleep, stress — these aren't soft suggestions I throw in at the end of an appointment. They're medicine. I'm an active person myself — trail running, hiking, lifting weights — and I genuinely believe that movement and a well-fueled body are some of the most powerful things a person can do for their long-term health.

What drew me to medical weight management specifically was watching patients struggle for years with something that had a clinical solution they'd never been offered. The conventional medical system often doesn't have time for the conversation that weight loss actually requires. Patients get told to eat less and move more, handed a pamphlet, and sent on their way. And then they blame themselves when it doesn't work — even though the deck was stacked against them from the start.

GLP-1 medications changed what's possible. Not as a shortcut — I'm very deliberate about combining them with real nutritional guidance, lifestyle support, and the minimum effective dose philosophy — but as a tool that finally gives patients a fair fight against a biology that's been working against them. Being able to offer that, through a practice built on the values I've carried since the Marines, is why I started Brightly.

I'm not interested in running a practice that churns through patients, ships prescriptions, and calls it care. That's not what I signed up for — in the military or in medicine. The patients I work with are people who've often been let down by a system that didn't have time for them. I take that seriously. I think about the standard my mom set, showing up for others even when things were hardest for her, and I try to bring that same energy into every patient interaction at Brightly.
